Local SEO Guide: Ranking Higher on Google Maps

10 min read

Local SEO is the set of practices aimed at making your business stand out in location-based searches such as "hairdresser near me" or "web design in Diyarbakır", both in classic search results and on Google Maps. For almost any business with a physical address, a service area, or a focus on a specific city, it delivers faster and more measurable results than classic SEO.

What is local SEO, and who benefits from it?

For searches that include a location or carry local intent (for example, a user typing "pharmacy" with location services enabled), Google places a box with a map and 3 businesses, called the "Local Pack", at the top of the results page. Getting into this box often brings even more clicks than ranking at the top of the classic organic results, because that is where the user's eye goes first.

Local SEO is especially critical for the following businesses: shops, restaurants, clinics, law and accounting firms, repair services, hairdressers, home service providers, and agencies serving a specific region.

Setting up your Google Business Profile correctly

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the foundation of your visibility on Maps. Things to keep in mind during setup:

  • The right category: Choose the most specific primary category possible (e.g., "SEO Consulting Service" instead of "Software Company", if available). A wrong, overly broad category causes you to appear in irrelevant searches while disappearing from the right ones.
  • Complete and consistent information: Business hours, phone number, website, and address should be complete.
  • Service area: If you do not have a physical store (for example, a tradesperson working on-site), you can hide your address and define the areas you serve.
  • Photos: Regularly updated, genuine photos of your workplace, team, and products significantly increase your profile's engagement.
  • Products/services list: Add each service you offer separately, with a description.
  • Questions & Answers: Add and answer frequently asked questions yourself in advance; if you leave this section empty, others may add random questions and answers.

NAP consistency: the most overlooked detail

Your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) information must be written exactly the same everywhere on the internet. Google partly evaluates your business's legitimacy and trustworthiness based on this consistency.

Example of inconsistencyWhy is it a problem?
"0551 184 23 26" on the website, "05511842326" in a directoryThe same number written differently — harder to match
"Kayapınar Mah." in one place, "Kayapınar Mahallesi" in anotherAddress matching weakens
Old and new addresses mixed across different directoriesGoogle struggles to determine which information is current

Make sure the information on your website, your Google Business Profile, and any other directories you are listed in (Yandex Business, industry directories, etc.) matches character for character.

Review management

The number of reviews and your rating directly affect both user decisions and your ranking on Maps. An effective review strategy rests on three pillars:

  1. Ask naturally: Share your review link in a short SMS/WhatsApp message after the service. Bulk or pushy requests violate Google's policies.
  2. Respond to every review — positive or negative. An unanswered negative review does far more damage than one that has been answered.
  3. Do not turn a negative review into an argument. Reply briefly, professionally, and with a focus on solutions; if necessary, continue the conversation privately.

Local keyword strategy

In local searches, the keyword pattern is usually "service + location", such as "diyarbakır web design" or "kayapınar hairdresser". Use these keywords naturally in these three places:

  • In the page title and H1 (e.g., "Diyarbakır SEO Services")
  • In your Google Business Profile description
  • On the contact and service pages of your website, without forcing them

If you serve multiple districts or cities, creating a separate page for each (with unique content for each page, not copy-paste) also gives you an advantage in classic search.

3 signal groups that affect Maps rankings

According to the framework Google itself has published, there are three main groups:

SignalWhat it means
ProximityDistance from the searching user's location. You cannot control it directly.
RelevanceHow well your profile matches the search query — category, description, and services list all count here.
ProminenceNumber of reviews/rating, backlinks, brand awareness, and your overall web presence.

You cannot change proximity, but you can directly influence relevance and prominence — all the sections above are essentially aimed at strengthening these two signals.

Common mistakes

  • Using a fake address or registering multiple businesses at the same address — this violates Google Business Profile policies and can get your profile suspended.
  • Category inflation: Adding unrelated categories lowers your relevance.
  • Setting up the profile and forgetting about it. Profiles that do not add photos, publish posts, or answer questions lose engagement over time.
  • Buying reviews. When fake reviews are detected, the entire profile loses trust; sometimes it is removed permanently.

Realistic timeline: A new, fully set-up Google Business Profile usually starts showing movement in local search results within 2-6 weeks. In highly competitive city centers, this may take longer; here too, patience and consistency are the most decisive factors.
